Here are some safety and environment tips published by the NSW Roads & Maritime Services. Designed to keep you safe on the water, we think they're worth repeating:
- A lifejacket never ruined a day on the water. Be safe and wear yours.
- Check the weather before leaving, and keep an eye on it while out.
- Keep your engine in good working order.
- Check fuel system for leaks before starting the engine.
- Be aware of your noise and your wash.
- Dispose of all waste properly ashore.
- Stay in touch - install a marine radio and an EPIRB. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
- Carry sufficient fuel and water.
- Know the distress signals and navigation rules.
- When navigating or anchoring in shallow waters, take care not to damage seagrass beds.
- Go easy with alcohol and stay under the legal limit.
- Be Prop Aware - especially around swimmers, spearfishers and snorkellers.
