Used by many offshore racers and cruisers, this sleeve makes handling a spinnaker much easier and safer. The spinnaker is hoisted while inside the sleeve, and then a control line is used to slide the sleeve up to the top of the sail. To lower the spinnaker, the sleeve is slide down, quickly reducing windage so the sail can be easily lowered into its bag. The sleeve is a special slippery, breathable knit; reducing friction and allowing the sail to dry when stowed.
The control line runs in a seperate sleeve next to the sail to prevent fouling. The line is two different sizes, joined in a loop. The smaller line is used to hoist the sleeve, and the larger line is used to lower it. The control line can be run through a snatch block and winch to douse in heavy conditions. The control line sleeve is a contrasting colour so that twists in the sleeve can be rectified before hoisting.
When deployed, the sleeve bunches up on a short wire pendant, above the spinnaker.
To chose the right sleeve length, find the "I" measurement of your rig. This is the distance from the halyard sheave to the deck, and is generally also close to the spinnaker's luff length. Pick a spinnaker sleeve size that matches this length.
